OMODA 5 EV

2026-09-24 19:50:00

Vehicle Overview

The OMODA 5 EV is an all-electric compact SUV developed by Chery for global markets, positioned as an intelligent electric vehicle tailored for stylish daily commuting and family mobility. Serving as one of the pioneering full-electric models under Chery's independently operated export marque OMODA, it made its global debut at the 2024 Geneva International Motor Show before being officially unveiled to the Chinese market as the OMODA E5 at the Beijing Auto Show later that year. Together with the internal combustion engine (ICE) OMODA 5, the OMODA 5 EV completes a comprehensive product line-up spanning petrol, hybrid (SHS), and pure electric powertrains, forming a core pillar of Chery's global new energy vehicle strategy.

In terms of dimensions, the OMODA 5 EV measures 4,424 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and 1,588 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,630 mm. Kerb weight ranges between 1,700 kg and 1,800 kg depending on the variant. The body is compact yet spacious, with a wheelbase that stands out against segment rivals. Standard boot capacity is rated at approximately 360 to 380 litres, expanding further with the rear seats folded flat to easily accommodate the cargo needs of small families.

Design Language

The exterior of the OMODA 5 EV adopts a dedicated EV design language that distinctly sets it apart from its ICE counterpart. The front fascia features a fully enclosed grille paired with full-width LED daytime running lights and a split headlamp arrangement; the lower bumper adopts a sleeker, more rounded profile, creating a sporty and refined front stance. The front badging features prominent "OMODA" lettering instead of the traditional Chery emblem, reinforcing OMODA's positioning as an independent brand overseas. Along the flanks, a floating roof design, flush door handles, and aero-optimised wheels deliver a drag coefficient superior to the segment average. At the rear, Y-shaped full-width LED tail lights, a sporty tailgate spoiler, and a crossover-style rear bumper provide sharp visual distinction.

Inside, the cabin features a wraparound dual-screen layout with twin 12.3-inch floating ultra-wide curved HD displays integrating the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, significantly cutting down physical buttons for a clean, tech-laden centre console. The cabin is trimmed in a dual-tone colour scheme with quality faux leather upholstery, delivering a youthful and premium ambiance. A 64-colour ambient lighting system further enhances the cabin atmosphere during night drives.

Powertrain and Performance

The OMODA 5 EV is powered by a front-mounted single electric motor driving the front wheels (FWD). Motor outputs vary by market: the domestic China-spec version is rated at 150 kW (approx. 204 PS) and 340–350 Nm of torque; select export variants (such as the model displayed at the Munich Motor Show) produce 155 kW and 288 Nm. For acceleration, the 0–100 km/h sprint takes 7.5 seconds on the domestic variant and 7.6 to 7.8 seconds on export variants. Top speed is rated at 172 km/h under the WLTP cycle.

Energy is stored in a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack supplied by Gotion High-Tech or CATL. Driving range figures vary across testing cycles: up to 550 km under CLTC, approximately 505 km under NEDC, and 402 to 430 km on the WLTP cycle. This range outpaces several key rivals in its segment (such as the BYD Atto 3 Standard Range at 345 km WLTP and the MG ZS EV at 320 km WLTP). In terms of efficiency, combined WLTP energy consumption is rated at approximately 15.5 to 16.9 kWh/100 km.

On the charging front, the updated 2025 model supports 130 kW DC fast charging (up from 80–110 kW on earlier versions), taking just 28 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%. Standard 11 kW AC charging takes around 3 to 4 hours for a full charge. In addition, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power supply comes standard across all variants to power external electrical appliances and camping gear, greatly enhancing outdoor practicality. A heat pump air-conditioning system is also standard, effectively minimising energy consumption in cold climates to preserve driving range.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the OMODA 5 EV features a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension setup—a configuration widely adopted among electric SUVs in this segment to balance ride comfort and production cost. Revised front suspension geometry paired with retuned electric power steering provides sharper steering response, boosting both low-speed agility and high-speed stability. For stopping power, higher trims feature a 360° camera system and high-performance brake pads, working alongside active safety systems like AEB to ensure confident braking performance. Multiple selectable drive modes allow drivers to tailor steering characteristics to different driving conditions. Overall chassis damping is biased towards comfort, with targeted tuning to absorb road undulations and control body roll, delivering a more pliant and refined ride than the ICE version.

Cabin and Equipment

Cabin technology is a standout highlight of the OMODA 5 EV. The infotainment system is anchored by dual 12.3-inch ultra-wide curved HD screens, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system also packs 4G telematics, online navigation, voice command, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, delivering seamless smartphone integration. Higher-spec variants add a 50W wireless smartphone charger, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an air purification system for elevated occupant comfort. Audio duties are handled by a standard 6-speaker Sony premium sound system, offering passengers high-quality acoustic performance. For seating, top-spec variants offer power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, with leatherette or leather upholstery and seat heating available on select versions. A noticeable plastic odour is present in new units upon delivery, though it gradually dissipates over time. NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) suppression is well executed, with cabin noise registering just 62.9 dB during high-speed cruising at 120 km/h, outperforming most competitors in the same price range.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety is one of the core strengths of the OMODA 5 EV, having secured dual five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP. Specific crash test scores are as follows: in Euro NCAP tests, it achieved 87% for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, and 88% for Safety Assist; in ANCAP tests, it scored 87% for Adult Occupant Protection, 88% for Child Occupant Protection, and 83% for Safety Assist. High-strength steel accounts for up to 78% of the body structure, with ultra-high-strength and hot-formed steel deployed across the front structure, B-pillars, and door frames to create a robust safety cage. During frontal offset crash tests, the passenger cell remained stable with no significant deformation of the A-pillars or doors. 7 airbags come standard across all variants.

In terms of active safety, the OMODA 5 EV is equipped with a comprehensive Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, featuring standard Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Highway Assist, Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), and a 360° camera system. The AEB system accurately detects vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, applying automated emergency braking across a wide speed window to mitigate collision risks. In active safety evaluations, its ANCAP Safety Assist score (83%) comfortably exceeded the 70% threshold required for a five-star rating. However, ANCAP noted that certain rigid structures in the lower dashboard posed a potential risk of knee injury during frontal offset impacts, side curtain airbags showed instances of incomplete deployment (resulting in partial point deductions), and minor room for improvement was identified in VRU protection.

Market Performance and Reception

The OMODA 5 EV is a core model in Chery's globalisation offensive, recording encouraging sales performance across multiple overseas markets. By late 2025, the OMODA and JAECOO marques had expanded into 64 global markets, spanning Europe, Asia, Australasia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. In March 2026, combined global sales for OMODA and JAECOO reached 61,254 units, representing a year-on-year surge of 210% to set a new monthly record, with new energy vehicle (NEV) deliveries jumping 471% year-on-year. In Australia, the Chery C5/E5 line recorded 6,162 units in 2025, ranking as the brand's second best-selling model range locally.

Pricing varies across markets due to differing local tax structures and tariffs: in the UK, the updated 2025 model retails between £33,065 and £34,565, supported by a 7-year/100,000-mile vehicle warranty and an 8-year battery warranty; in Belgium, the Premium variant starts at around €38,490; in Australia, the Chery E5 is priced from AUD 36,990 before on-road costs; in Thailand, it is priced between THB 899,000 and THB 949,000 (approx. RM193,000 to RM204,000); while in Malaysia, pricing starts from RM146,800, making history as the country's first locally assembled (CKD) Chinese-brand EV, with local assembly rolling at the Inokom plant in Kulim. In its domestic market of China, the OMODA E5 was previewed at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show and has yet to officially go on sale as of June 2026.

In terms of market and media reception, the OMODA 5 EV has earned positive reviews for its competitive driving range (430 km WLTP eclipsing the BYD Atto 3 Standard Range's 345 km), smooth power delivery, strong safety credentials (dual five-star ratings), and generous in-cabin tech. Conversely, criticisms have pointed to the tactile feel of certain interior trim plastics (which look upmarket from afar but feel hollow to the touch), the touchscreen being positioned slightly far from the driver (requiring leaning forward to operate), and suspension damping that could benefit from further refinement over rough roads.

From a product significance perspective, the OMODA 5 EV serves as a flagship statement in establishing "OMODA" as an independent global marque, while setting a benchmark for Chinese-brand EVs achieving dual Euro NCAP and ANCAP five-star safety accolades overseas. With its LFP battery, 430 km WLTP range, dual 12.3-inch curved screens, comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite, and highly competitive pricing, it demonstrates the solid capabilities of Chinese new energy vehicles across safety, technology, and value for money, laying a strong foundation for Chery's push towards its global "million-unit era".
